Insurance Authority warns against deceptive selling activities on social media platforms

1 December 2023

The Insurance Authority (IA) today (1 December 2023) alerted the public to deceptive selling activities on social media platforms from fraudsters who purport to be insurance intermediaries of Dah Sing Insurance Company (1976) Limited (DSI), an authorized insurer in Hong Kong. The case has been reported to the Hong Kong Police Force for further investigation.

Fraudsters contacted and lured the victim into purchasing a motor insurance policy through Facebook and WhatsApp messages. The victim, after paying the premium through Faster Payment System (FPS) and receiving a cover note from the fraudsters, later found out that the cover note was forged and the policy application for the victim’s vehicle has never been made with DSI.

Anyone who has provided personal information to or conducted any insurance transactions through suspected fraudsters in relation to DSI’s policies should contact DSI’s Customer Service Hotline at (852) 2808-5000 and report the case to the Hong Kong Police Force.

Members of the public are advised to pay premiums directly to the insurer through official methods specified by the insurer and avoid making payments via individual insurance agents. If there is any suspicion over the identity of the parties involved, they should halt the transaction immediately.
