Insurance Authority announces launching of the Anti-Scam Consumer Protection Charter 2.0

The Insurance Authority (IA) announced today (10 April 2024), together with other financial regulators in Hong Kong 1 , the launching of the Anti-Scam Consumer Protection Charter 2.0 (Charter) which encourages financial institutions to adopt measures aimed at avoiding customers from being affected by illegal digital acts and to remind the general public on the importance of safeguarding their personal information.

All institutions participating in the Charter will undertake to refrain from sending any instant electronic messages with embedded hyperlinks to acquire personal information from their customers, incorporate anti-scam messages in the communication with their customers and the general public, provide suitable channels for their customers to make enquiries and enhance relevant training for their frontline staff. Among the 230 institutions which have indicated support for the Charter, 73 are authorized insurers and licensed insurance broker companies.

Mr Clement Cheung, Chief Executive Officer of the IA, welcomed this joint effort by the financial regulators. “The Charter is a cross-sector initiative that underscores our collective resolve in combatting digital frauds and scams. The IA will strive to maintain a reliable and convenient environment for normal business transactions to be conducted, hence preserving public confidence in the insurance industry,” he said.
