The Insurance Authority (IA) hosted the Asian Insurance Forum (AIF) today (10 December 2024) under the theme “Rising to the Challenge amidst Global Volatility”, featuring insightful keynote speeches and panel discussions by over 20 esteemed speakers and financial leaders from around the world. This seventh edition of the AIF took a deep dive into a range of meticulously curated discussion topics, including global supervisory priorities, bolstering the headquarters economy, and insurance solutions in wealth management, attracting an audience of over 2,400, both in person and online.
Mr Stephen Yiu, Chairman of the IA, welcomed the diverse mix of participants, many of whom brought expertise far beyond insurance services. “Traditional risks are aggravated by geopolitical tensions, while emerging and exotic risks are created by climate change and cyber exposure,” he said. “Today’s AIF highlights the role of insurance in supporting people and businesses in striving for sustained progress by effectively mitigating uncertainties.”
Mr John Lee, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), exuded confidence in his opening address before the global audience, saying that Hong Kong is well on its way to becoming an even more attractive destination for insurance and risk management amid global uncertainties. “As one of the world's top three global financial centres, and a hub for asset and risk management, Hong Kong plays a pivotal role in leading the development of insurance across the region and beyond,” he said. “The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area presents a far-reaching opportunity for Hong Kong to lead regional integration, facilitating mutual access to insurance markets and enabling smoother mobility of people and capital across the region.”
The first keynote speaker, Mr Jonathan Dixon, Secretary General of the International Association of Insurance Supervisors (IAIS) updated the audience on the major achievements and initiatives of the IAIS to strengthen the global insurance market. He also announced that Hong Kong would host the 2026 IAIS Annual General Meeting and Annual Conference. “We are truly honoured to bring our big annual conference to such a vibrant and dynamic city,” he said. “We know the IA will do a fantastic job of organising an unforgettable conference.”
Ms Luo Yanjun, Director General of the Personal Insurance Supervision Department of the National Financial Regulatory Administration, delivered another keynote speech providing valuable insights on the outlook for the Mainland insurance industry and its interaction with the local market. “With the deepening of market reform and prosperous development of the insurance industry in the Mainland, the exchanges of talent, technical knowhow and management experiences between the two sides has become ever closer and more frequent,” Ms Luo said. “We should further deepen the exchanges and cooperation between the insurance industries of the two places, and jointly cope with global market fluctuations.”
Kicking off the luncheon session, Mr Cheuk Wing-hing, Deputy Chief Secretary of the Government of the HKSAR, took stock of the Hong Kong insurance sector and its role in tackling emerging risks and embracing future opportunities. “As an industry, we have the power to lead not only in managing risks, but also in developing solutions for a more sustainable future,” he said.
The programme concluded with a dialogue session with IA leadership, in which our senior executives had a candid exchange with the audience on how the IA strove for progress from various perspectives, guided by common core values and strong team spirit.
